An old friend of mine told me a line from a quote last week, “Great people do things before they are ready.”
We had been discussing petty fears of some sort. She was going to a party where she didn’t know anyone but wanted to leave a good first impression, I had been nervous about an event I was planning. We were pondering our inadequacies, when she remembered the line from an Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls Youtube video.
Although I do not condone the quality of this video production, the message is lasting. It kept slyly edging into my mind throughout the week. I thought of when I decided to play my first music gig before I felt ready. It was not perfect. Definitely not. But I did it anyways— overall enjoying myself. Each time I play one it gets a bit easier (I’m up to 5 now.)
The point is, there is never a right time. There is only now or later. Feeling perfectly adequate when taking a leap into an unknown territory is unrealistic. Heck, maybe impossible. The good thing is you have an opportunity to see what works and what doesn’t. When running our first advertisement, at HCFmedia there were many uncertainties. We had a general idea of who we wanted to target, the metrics we wanted to track, and goals we aimed to attain. It wasn’t perfect. Or easy. In fact, we have to constantly measure and adjust accordingly. It’s like when I played my first gig and later realized my volume had been WAY too low for the entire performance, the next time I cranked it up to receive a much better response.
The learning never ends. Neither does the risk taking. It does get easier, and in my opinion more fun. So get out there, and be great!
“Great people do things before they’re ready. They do things before they know they can do it. Doing what you’re afraid of, getting out of your comfort zone, taking risks like that- that’s what life is. You might be really good. You might find out something about yourself that’s really special and if you’re not good, who cares? You tried something. Now you know something about yourself” — Amy Poehler
