One of the beauties of helping run a film company is that I get a lot of good resumes. A ton of talent. Passion. Initiative. Very Big Dreams.
And that’s a good thing.
Where most people fall a little short though is when they spend all their time talking about themselves. A laundry list of achievements or desires that are often impressive and substantial. But not really what I want to hear.
What do I want to hear? How you can help me.
Because in the end, I don’t want to hear about you at all. I want to hear about how you solve my problems. What solutions you bring to the table that dovetail perfectly with the challenges I’m facing right now. Because at the end of the day, you’ll only be hired in this (or any other) job in that context.
Think about that.
Look at our work – and understand who we are. Then define for us why you are the missing piece to the puzzle. Your cookie cutter resume doesn’t help do that.
It’s the same approach we have to take with our clients. Sure, they want to know we’re qualified – but what they really want to know is that we’ve listened enough to know what they need as a company. That we are engaged in coming up with answers that are uniquely crafted to them and them alone. Resumes – even a decent portfolio like ours – are rarely enough.
What everyone wants is that kind of story. That kind of crazy.
So take the time to know more about me. About HCFmedia. And ultimately, about your true value to our mission. That will rock my world. And I will always email you back, regardless. Because we always appreciate the outreach.

Finally, get your online portfolio together. It’s an absolute requirement in just about any field these days, and it’s a crime that colleges aren’t requiring this of grads. This can be a huge differentiator. Easy solutions are provided by SquareSpace or WordPress. If you don’t have one, then I won’t spend too much time with you. It’s that simple.
